The upstairs apartment had the front living area completely brought down to studs to update electrical and then drywalled with new carpeting and wood flooring throughout the entire unit as well many new appliances and fresh paint. In 2014 we also invested $30,000 into a new state of the art roof with a 25 year life span. In 2019 we had a new boiler installed which services the two upstairs apartments. The two apartments, back building and front business space all run on separate heating and air-conditions systems. The back and front space had these systems replaced shortly before we purchased the building. We also added a split air conditioning unit in the commercial kitchen in 2019. The kitchen is the gem of the entire building and was renovated approximately two years before we purchased the building. It is a state of the art commercial kitchen fully equipped. The building was tuck pointed by the previous owner who also replaced all the windows shortly before our ownership. Coffee Shop We had a 5 year plan when we bought the building. Our intent was to establish a coffee shop that would be the corner stone of downtown Elburn, that would bring life to the town in the daytime hours. Being on route 47, a major thoroughfare, we knew that the business was there. We had always intended to sell at the 5 year mark, leaving a successful, turn key business for the next owner with opportunities to still grow. When we were thinking about the concept of our coffee shop we felt that it was very important that we did not undervalue our customer base. We felt that many coffee shops outside major cities tended to go for a more country homey feel. This was something we wanted to avoid because we felt with the train station extending to Elburn there was a whole new wave of people who were moving here. Our goal was to look to the future with a nod to the past. We started with the look of the shop and our branding which we felt set the tone for the experience. Next we selected an amazing roaster from the city. Sparrow is owned and operated by Chris Chacko who has the only environmentally friendly roaster in the city and he utilizes almost all organic coffee beans. Since beginning with him we have never considered changing our product, he is hands down the best and we won't compromise. Despite the need to showcase an upscale and urban coffee shop, we knew that we didn't want the pretentious attitude that sometimes goes with the coffee experience. We pride ourselves on hiring only the most genuine and friendly people as our ambassadors to the front of the house.
